Sync.com vs 37signals LLC: Free Credits, Pricing & Eligibility Compared (2026)

Sync.com and 37signals LLC offer entirely different types of free software deals. Sync.com provides a permanent 5 GB encrypted cloud storage account for anyone, while 37signals LLC offers 100% free access specifically for students and academic classrooms. Here is a direct breakdown of how their free tiers, pricing, and eligibility rules compare.

Sync.com vs 37signals LLC: Key Features & Free Plans

Choosing between Sync.com and 37signals LLC depends on whether you need privacy-focused cloud storage or project management tools for academic work. Both platforms give users free options, but they target completely different use cases and audience segments.

Core Capabilities and Free Allowance

Sync.com focuses on private, zero-knowledge cloud file storage. Every free account includes 5 GB of secure storage space with end-to-end encryption enabled by default, ensuring only the account owner can access uploaded files.

37signals LLC (the makers of Basecamp and HEY) provides a dedicated education offer. Verified students and teachers get 100% free access to software tools designed for team collaboration, task tracking, and classroom communication.

Pricing Breakdown and Expiration Rules

Understanding plan limits and billing mechanics helps you avoid unexpected costs when upgrading your storage or software tools. Neither platform uses complex credit burn models, relying instead on storage caps or subscription verification.

How Upgrade Pricing Works

Sync.com operates on a strict storage quota model. The 5 GB free plan never expires and does not require credit card details upfront. If you outgrow the 5 GB limit, paid business and personal plans start from $12 per month billed annually.

37signals LLC grants free full access to eligible academic users. Approved student benefits apply strictly to future billing cycles and do not retroactively refund past charges. Standard paid pricing applies once you graduate or leave the academic program.

1. Sync.com Limits: Free accounts stay active indefinitely. Additional storage can be unlocked by upgrading to paid tiers or referring new users.
2. 37signals Academic Term: Free education access requires periodic verification using an active academic identity or school email address.
